Poker Nation A HighStakes LowLife Adventure into the Heart of a Gambling Country Andy Bellin 9780060199036 Books

I highly enjoyed this book. It was very similar in style and concept to the excellent book about Scrabble called "Word Freak" by Stefan Fatsis which came out last year and which I strongly recommend. I thought that Mr. Bellis was a fine writer and that the book was consistently entertaining. It seemed as if some of the more negative reviews of this book came from regular poker players and/or those who have read many poker books (usually both undoubtedly). I don't consider myself in either of those two categories and so perhaps I came to the book somewhat more open-minded (and in less of a comparative mindset) than some. I did find that in some parts of the book, the poker lingo got so heavy that it was a bit difficult to follow the author's point, but that is a minor quibble. The book may not be for everyone, but I recommend it.

Poker Nation A HighStakes LowLife Adventure into the Heart of a Gambling Country Andy Bellin 9780060199036 Books Reviews

A great read that was both entertaining and insightful. Bellin did a wonderful job at incorporating tactics and strategies for successful, winning poker, with humbling and hysterical personal anecdotes.
Everything is good as expected.
Andy has gone on to write some literature and script some real hollywood stuff. He writes well and tells grimy little secrets that are so fun - and best of all it's about POKER.
Every financial endeavor has 3 components Intellectual; mechanical; and emotional. Andrey covers all three bases in this wonderfully compelling adventure into the seedy underworld of habitual (professional) poker. I could not put it down. The mechanics of cheats, tells, and sleight of hand were fascinating. The psychology of the bluff and the "tilt", again, opened new worlds to me. There was just enough of the odds without getting too technical. Many fantastic endeavors look sexy and alluring on the surface (lives of Rock Stars; Flying jets off of carriers...)but when mortals are offered a peek into the nitty gritty, there's a lot of grit to getting there.
Everything you always wanted to know about poker but didn't know who to ask.

If some university ever has the courage to offer a degree in poker, this extraordinarily well-written book would be worthy of a Ph.D. It explores poker history, theory, mathematics, bluffing, cheating, tells, tilt, professional play, legal and not-so-legal card rooms, and does it all in a way that's a pleasure to read.

Will it improve your game? The only way to improve your game is playing (many, many hours), but I do think this book will provide you with a deeper understanding of every aspect of poker.
I am not an unbiased reviewer of this book. The author is my friend. But he is also the guy who taught me to play Texas Hold 'Em and other criminally fun poker games. So I can honestly report that this book captures all the energy of a poker table.
This is a special book. Part "how-to" manual, part history book, part road trip and part joke compendium, POKER NATION weaves the many tangled threads of a great game. Impressively, it's all these things without ever trying too hard. Bellin writes with such an easy, conversational style that the book feels like an old pal is telling stories. Meanwhile, he still manages to slip in painless little lessons and probability problems. By the end of the book, the reader is not only immensely entertained, but is a better poker player.
POKER NATION provides all of the action, thrill and brain rigor of a 10-hour visit to the Taj, without the secondhand smoke. Highly, enthusiastically recommended.
I had this in paper back years ago. I lost the book (or rather sold it at a garage sale), but wanted to reread it again. It offers decent poker advice, as well as fun stories that are also instructional in their themes. When I first read this, I was a low-limit players, I'm a mid-limit now, and wanted to re-read to see if it can add extra insight and help my current game. I fell it has, and I'm glad to read it again.
